Acc40-1178; 1940's Wide Brim Hat

2-piece hand-drafted pattern originally by Ladies' Home Journal, 'This is one of the easiest hats to make-and one of the loveliest, too.  It has a crown that ties around, bandeau fashion, and a droopy, flattering brim.  The original, which was designed by a famous New York designer of hats, was in black taffeta-lovely to wear with printed summer frocks'.  One may eliminate the brim altogether to create a turban.

This design was originally published in 1936, so I also consider this pattern part of  my 1930's collection.

The sizes printed on the pattern require 1 yard of 44/45" fabric with no nap and an equal amount of crinoline (buckram).

Size:

Head size 21-1/2" to 22-1/2" with instructions on how to re-size the pattern.  Measure your head with a cloth dressmaker’s tape about ½” above your eyebrows where the hat will rest.  If you are without a tape measure, use a piece of string and measure it against a yard stick.  Err on the larger size if your measurement is not exact.  See diagram.
